Those who are new to cycling may find themselves confused about which type of inner tube valve is best for their needs. There are two types of bicycle valves, the Schrader and the Presta. The Schrader is generally used on mountain bikes, while the Presta is more common on road bikes and other comfort bikes.
The difference between the two is the amount of space they have to hold air. The Schrader has a wider diameter than the Presta, but it holds more air. The Presta is also thinner, but has a better seal and is able to hold higher pressures. The Schrader has a removable core, while the Presta is fixed. There are also Presta valves that have a removable core.
The Presta valve has a metal screw-on top, which protects the valve from leaking air. It is not as resistant to dirt and debris as the Schrader. The Presta also has a small nut on top, which holds the valve in place. This nut needs to be unthreaded before air can enter the tube.
The Schrader has a threaded outer wall, which helps it to stay in place. The pin, which is the depressible part of the valve, opens and closes the valve, controlling the flow of air in and out. It is usually the same diameter from top to bottom, although it may be a bit thinner or wider.
The Presta is the smallest of the three bicycle inner tube valves, but it's still a good idea to use it. The tyre valve is a fiddly little system, and not all bicycles come with a Schrader. You can get a Presta valve from a variety of manufacturers, but they are often more expensive than their Schrader counterparts.
The Schrader is not as big a deal, but it does have a removable core that helps it to hold air more efficiently. It also has a larger diameter than the Presta, which makes it more likely to fit into a hole. However, the Schrader requires a larger hole in your wheel's rim. You'll also need a wrench to unscrew the valve core from the valve cap. The Schrader may be available in gas stations or at your local bike shop, but it's not as common.
The Presta valve is more likely to have a reusable core, and the small nut that holds it in place requires less manipulation. Those who have used Presta valves have reported that they are less likely to bend or break. It's also possible to remove the core, but if you do, be sure to leave the inner tube in the hole for a few days before you inflate it again.
The "easy pump" system is also a good way to inflate an inner tube. The system consists of a small pump adapter that works with a presta or Schrader valve. The adapter has a rubber seal that keeps air from escaping when the pin isn't lowered.
